Learning Module 2:
From Data Proficient to Data Savvy

Approx 45 minutes

This module aims to enable newsroom staff to move from a basic operational ability to read metrics and understand measurement to a more mature capability to interpret behaviors, compare results, understand user journeys, and use data to formulate smarter questions and make better-informed editorial decisions.

In Module 1 the focus was on understanding what is measured, how it is measured, and how to read basic data correctly. In this second block the focus shifts toward extracting meaning from data, relating metrics to one another, understanding audience behavior over time, and using a more structured perspective to improve editorial and business performance.

The transition between Data Proficient and Data Savvy does not consist of simply using more complex tools, but of developing a more analytical way of thinking. A person at this level no longer looks only at isolated figures. They begin to ask:

  • which hypotheses are worth testing
  • what patterns repeat in the data
  • what journeys different types of users follow
  • what differences exist between segments
  • which metrics truly help understand an opportunity or a problem
  • how to compare results without falling into superficial conclusions

By the end of this module, the participant will be able to:

  • interpret editorial and business performance through more interconnected metrics
  • understand the logic of a user and subscription funnel
  • understand measurement and comparison in multiplatform environments
  • work with behavior-based user segmentation
  • formulate and evaluate hypotheses using basic experimentation techniques
  • design more useful dashboards for different profiles within an organization
